Hoyer Statement on Antisemitism Awareness Act

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) issued the following statement after voting with a bipartisan group of Members to pass H.R. 6090 - Antisemitism Awareness Act of 2023:

"Today, I joined a bipartisan group of House Members to pass legislation that will help combat antisemitism - a persistent cancer on our society. Broadening the Department of Education's definition of antisemitism for anti-discrimination enforcement, the Antisemitism Awareness Act is especially crucial in light of recent harassment and intimidation of Jewish students on college campuses across the country. We must ensure Jews can live safely without fear of violence or discrimination. Passing this bill is an important step toward that goal. It must not be the last.

"The legislation we passed today is incomplete on its own, which is why it is crucial that the House also pass Rep. Kathy Manning's more comprehensive bipartisan Countering Antisemitism Act. We need to continue implementing the all-of-government approach that President Biden laid out in his National Strategy to Counter Antisemitism if we are to eradicate antisemitic hate in all its forms. I urge Speaker Johnson to put that critical legislation on the Floor for a vote, and I will keep working to ensure that our Congress stands up for the Jewish community during this trying and often frightening time."
