Free Curbside Collection for Storm Debris Begins Next Week; City Compost Center Open this Saturday for Drop-Off

Press Release

Des Moines, Iowa- Wednesday, May 22, 2024 - Des Moines residents affected by Tuesday's sever weather will be able to get rid of tree debris next week with free curbside pickup for Monday, Wednesday and Friday collection customers. Residents may also drop-off yard and tree debris this Saturday, May 25, at the City's Compost Center at 1601 Harriet Street from 7 a.m. until noon.

"While most of Des Moines was fortunate to avoid the more hazardous effects of Tuesday's storms, we are seeing areas with downed trees and branches," said Public Works Director Jonathan Gano. "As our arborists work hard to clear public roadways and sidewalks, we are also preparing to help residents clear their property of debris with curbside collection."

Residents in the affected areas (those whose regular collection days are Monday, Wednesday or Friday) will need to have their debris at the curb one day after their regular collection day due to the Memorial Day Holiday.

All regular yard waste guidelines (except for the green Compost It! sticker requirement) still apply, meaning large tree, branch or stump removal will need to be done through a contractor.

The City's Compost Center will be open this Saturday, May 25, from 7 a.m. until noon for easy yard and tree debris drop-off. Normal Compost SCRUB rules apply.

Residents should report trees or downed branches blocking roadways or public walkways using the myDSMmobile app or by calling (515) 283-4950.
