China’s Grip on the Global South: Here to Stay

Becoming the leader of the South is what China has aimed at since the early XXI century.
Through a variety of approaches, ranging from traditional bilateral relations, to "global multilateral" and "group-type multilateral diplomacy", Beijing's diplomacy towards the developing world has so far progressively clustered the South into a group that acted cohesively in international affairs. China has expanded its economic presence in the developing world to cement its grip up to a level that created a range of asymmetries with partner countries. This is now often viewed as a new dependence by developing countries on China rather than on the North. At the same time, the other large developing countries in the South have become less comfortable with China's self-proclaimed role, notably India.
