Timor-Leste received additional 76,800 doses of Astrazeneca vaccine through the COVAX Facility

Team Europe - the European Union, its Member States and the European Investment Bank - is proud to contribute to the COVAX facility, helping to ensure Timorese people have access to vaccines, in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the GAVI global initiative, UNICEF and other partners. Making sure everyone has access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines is a top priority of the European Union since in the fight against this global pandemic nobody is safe until everyone is safe.

In addition to its support for COVAX, Team Europe has been proud to provide support to Timor-Leste in the battle against COVID-19 since March 2020. Total financial support amounts to more than USD 6.4 million. This includes over USD 1.2 million made available to the WHO for their immediate COVID work by the European Union's Humanitarian Office (ECHO). It also covers nearly USD 2.4 million worth of support to the WHO to support its work with the Ministry of Health to mitigate the health impacts of communicable diseases - particularly of COVID-19 - and to contribute to building strong, effective and resilient health systems in Timor-Leste.

Team Europe has also provided support through civil society organisations to help vulnerable people most affected by COVID, and, through the Spotlight Initiative, has targeted assistance to those at risk of domestic violence, a problem exacerbated by COVID and restrictions on movement it has necessitated.

The European Union Ambassador Andrew Jacobs said: 'I am delighted that thanks to the joint efforts of partners, today we have the second delivery of COVAX vaccines to Dili, Timor-Leste. This is a great illustration of global solidarity. The European Union is proud to join the Government of Timor-Leste, the WHO, UNICEF, and many other contributors to make this happen.Team Europe will continue to stand together with the Timorese people in the fight against COVID, helping to ensure that the battle is won'.

The COVAX facility is a multilateral initiative to which Team Europe - the European Union, its Member States and the European Investment Bank - is contributing over EUR 2.2 billion (USD 2.6 billion) to ensure the achievement of the COVAX supply of 1.3 billion vaccines to 92 low and middle-income countries, including Timor-Leste.
