IAEA Accelerator Conference Kicks Off with Sustainable Development Focus

The far-reaching capabilities of accelerator technology help countries progress towards sustainable development, and the IAEA's work with accelerators helps fulfil a core part of its 'Atoms for Peace and Development' mandate, IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi said this morning at the opening of the International Conference on Accelerators for Research and Sustainable Development: From Good Practices Towards Socioeconomic Impact.

Mr Grossi was joined by three IAEA Deputy Directors General in an opening panel that laid out the objectives of the conference, the diversity of accelerator applications, and the support the IAEA offers countries in developing and making use of accelerator technology. The conference is a first of its kind for the IAEA on this topic, attracting close to 500 experts from 72 countries in person and online.

Focusing on applications of accelerator science and technology, the five-day event is geared towards research scientists engaged in accelerator-based research and applications; accelerator operators and users; entrepreneurs or stakeholders involved in applications of accelerator technologies; and policy makers and regulators. If you would like to virtually attend as an observer, you can still register.
