DSCC marks Women’s History Month

Defense Supply Center Columbus celebrated workforce diversity March 20 during its annual Women's History Month observance hosted by the Federal Women's Program from Defense Logistics Agency Land and Maritime and the Defense Finance and Accounting Service - Columbus.

Program organizers said this year's theme, "Women Who Advocate for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion," honored the dedication of women working daily for inclusion, equality and fairness to build a more positive future and eliminate discrimination.

"Today we're here to celebrate the unsung heroes, the trailblazers and the everyday warriors who are making a difference in their communities and beyond," said Rebecca Beck, director for DFAS Enterprise Solutions and Standards.

Beck, a 2023 Presidential Rank Award winner for Meritorious Executive, opened the program speaking on the power of championing diversity initiatives.

"We've all heard the statistics about the gender pay gap, the lack of representation in leadership positions and the myriad of challenges women face in their personal and professional lives," Beck said. "One of the most powerful tools in our fight for equality, diversity and inclusion is representation. When women see themselves reflected in positions of leadership, in the media and academia and other influential spheres, it sends a powerful message that their voices matter and that they belong."

Beck preceded keynote speaker Debra White-Johnson, chief of staff for DFAS' Strategy and Support Directorate. White-Johnson is an experienced program, project and change management professional with over 30 years in public service. Following introductory remarks from DLA Human Resources Services Director Kate DeDobbelaere, White-Johnson took the stage to share insights on DFAS efforts toward breaking down barriers to workforce inclusion.

"What are we advocating for? Meaningful change," White-Johnson said. "We're looking at the policies, the procedures, the process, the controls…every aspect of our systematic process within the agency or organization - from the inside out - to make sure that we get rid of any barriers that exist to being diverse, inclusive and belonging."

White-Johnson presented processes and updates DFAS has implemented to help break down barriers for diverse groups of employees.

As an example of DFAS' efforts to create change, she highlighted the Black Female Barrier Analysis, an effort started in 2019 to research and present action plans to increase black female representation within DFAS. The analysis led to recommendations that were incorporated into the agency's strategic plan in 2022.

White-Johnson said the BFBA wasn't just about improving the environment for one specific demographic, adding, "any improvements that we make, improve it for everyone."

"From the time an employee is recruited to the time they retire and walk out of the door, you need to consider their experience from beginning to end," she added.

Prior to White-Johnson's presentation, DLA Land and Maritime vocalist Lisa Griffin sang Andra Day's Rise Up, receiving a standing ovation. Federal Women's Program Champion Veronica Brown-Godbott concluded the event and invited attendees to a cupcake and punch reception hosted by committee members.

As DSCC's premiere program focused on supporting women in the workplace, the Federal Women's Program produces two observances a year - Women's History Month in March and Women's Equality Day in August.
