Memorial Day Event at Appomattox Court House NHP- May 27, 2024

Appomattox, Va- On Monday May 27, 2024, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park will offer special programming to examine the history and traditions of Memorial Day. All programs are free and open to the public. The program schedule is as follows:

11:00 AM - 3:00 PM- Build Your Own Wreath Originally known as Decoration Day, a common Memorial Day tradition includes adorning the graves of soldiers. Join a ranger to discuss Memorial Day traditions while creating your own paper wreath.

11:45 AM- Flag Raising CeremonyOn Memorial Day, special flag protocol is observed. The flag should fly at the half-staff position until noon only. Join a ranger at the flagpole for a brief reflection on those who sacrificed for our nation.

2:30 PM- Decoration Day: The Civil War Origins Examine the origins of Memorial Day with a special ranger-led program. The program will conclude with the National Moment of Remembrance at 3:00 pm.
