Walkers, bicyclists to benefit from sidewalk upgrades in John Day

July 30, 2021

JOHN DAY -- If you walk or ride your bicycle along U.S. Highway 395-C (South Canyon Boulevard) between John Day and Canyon City, your journey will be safer and smoother by end of next year.

In 2022, we will begin a safety improvement project along the west side of South Canyon Boulevard from Southwest Sixth Avenue to Grant Union High School. Funded in part by the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program, this project improves conditions for children who walk or bike to school. Work includes:

  • Building new sidewalks to current ADA standards.
  • Widening existing bicycle lane.
  • Installing curbs and gutters for stormwater runoff.
  • Construction of stormwater facilities.

Design continues through this year. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2022.

We held an online open house June 21-July 7. The information presented in the open house remains available for review at https://odotopenhouse.org/us395-sidewalk-improvements-john-day.
