Greenspring Review Announces Winners of First Annual New Voices Contest

On Tuesday, December 5, The Greenspring Review, Stevenson's student-run literary magazine, named the winners of its first annual New Voices Contest, a creative writing contest open to all Maryland high school students.

"The New Voices Contest awards went out to the pieces that truly touched our editors," said Samantha Stephenson '24, editor-in-chief of The Greenspring Review. "Not only did this contest give us the opportunity to lift up outstanding achievers with recognition, but we also spent countless hours delivering personalized feedback in order to encourage the entrants to continue improving their piece and their writing in general, even if they didn't win."

Over 200 high school students from across the state submitted their work. Out of those students, 18 were selected for special recognition and invited to Stevenson's campus with their families where the top three winners were announced. Naomi Ling won first place for "牙齿"* (*Chinese, meaning "teeth"); second place went to Summer Haddad for "Rhea"; and third place was awarded to Hannah Ahn for "trip to the moon". The honorable mentions can be viewed here.

"By drawing a large number of submissions, the contest offered a new experience for the editorial board and challenged them to adapt and work in ways that are closer to conditions in small presses and magazines," said Aaron Chandler, Chair of English, History, and Humanities, and Associate Professor of English. "The contest inspired and motivated the young writers of the state to generate and share their best creative material, while also raising awareness of Stevenson's English program among Maryland high school students, especially those interested in creative writing."

The Greenspring Review is currently accepting submissions for its Spring 2024 issue. Submission guidelines are available here. Applications for the 2024 Stevenson Summer Writers Workshop are also open, registration information is available here.
