Update on Monday evening shots fired

The Iowa City Police Department continues to investigate the shots fired incident at Mercer Park that occurred in the evening of Monday, May 9, 2022.

As of Tuesday afternoon, there are no known threats to the area. As a precautionary measure, police presence will increase in the and around the park while the active investigation continues.

The City and ICPD take all such acts of violence in the Iowa City community with the utmost seriousness. Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Police at 319-356-5275.

Anyone who may have experienced trauma related to this incident can reach out to the CommUnity Mobile Crisis Outreach team at 1-855-581-8111. Their mental health counselors can be dispatched to homes, schools, businesses, or public spaces. More information can be found at CommUnity's website.

At 7:57 p.m., Monday, May 9, 2022, Iowa City Police responded to a report of a large fight at Mercer Park, 1317 Dover St. While responding to the scene, officers were advised by dispatchers that witnesses reported multiple shots fired. Officers located evidence of a shooting at the scene. No injuries have been reported.

This incident remains under active investigation by the Iowa City Police Department.
