Papua New Guinea attends Launch of the Multilateral Minerals Security Partnership Forum

09/04/24 - Port Moresby, PNG - The PNG Minister for Mining Hon. Muguwa Dilu attended online the Minerals Security Partnership (MSP) Forum, a pivotal platform aimed at fostering international cooperation in the mining sector, held on Friday, April 5, 2024, in Leuven, Belgium. The inaugural event marked a significant milestone in global efforts to ensure the security and sustainability of critical mineral supply chains.

Minister Dilu attended this event alongside 33 other ministers/ government representatives from various prospective MSP members. The Minister was joined by the US Ambassador to PNG Ann Marie Yastishock together with the EU Ambassador to PNG Jacques Fradin who hosted them at the EU Delegation PNG office.

The MSP Forum is a multilateral cooperation platform aimed at bringing together raw materials producing and consuming countries at various stages of development, with a focus on advancing and accelerating individual projects and promoting policies that contribute to resilient value chains and to bringing local value-addition.

As an initial co-chair of the MSP Forum, the European Union, alongside the United States, aims to facilitate policy dialogue, accelerate projects, and promote resilient value chains within the mineral sector.

The MSP Forum had opening remarks from Mr. Valdis Dombrovskis, Executive Vice President of the European Commission, and Mr. Anthony Blinken, US Secretary of State.

Minister Dilu's engagement indicates Papua New Guinea's keen interest in exploring collaborative opportunities within the global mining community and PNG's potential in becoming a member of the MSP Forum. The Forum provides a valuable opportunity for Papua New Guinea to engage with international partners and contribute to shaping the future of sustainable mining practices in the country.

The EU Delegation to PNG together with the US Embassy in Port Moresby stand ready to assist PNG become a member of the MSP Forum.
