WIESBADEN- In the European Union (EU), foreign trade with Iran is subject to significant restrictions (only in German). Most recently, in July 2023, restrictions were tightened further because of Iran's support for Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine. Iran's role in the conflict between Hamas, the Islamist terrorist organisation, and Israel has prompted discussions about additional sanctions. Based on provisional data, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports that goods to the value of 241 million euros were exported from Germany to Iran in the period from January to February 2024, and goods to the value of 41.2 million euros were imported from Iran. Consequently, exports to Iran were up 22.1% compared with the same period a year earlier, while imports were down 13.1%. Regarding exports in the period from January to February 2024, Iran ranked 64th among Germany's most important trading partners, behind Colombia and ahead of Northern Macedonia. With regard to imports, Iran occupied 91st place in the first two months of 2024, between Ghana in 90th position and Laos in 92nd place.
