John Ward elected as Mayor

Councillor John Ward has been elected as the new Mayor of Waverley for 2024/25. The decision was taken by Waverley Borough Council at its Annual Council meeting on Tuesday 21 May. Councillor Penny Rivers was appointed as Deputy Mayor.

The new Mayor, who represents the Farnham Rowledge Ward, will hold the post for one year, attending a wide variety of engagements, acting as an ambassador for the council, chairing council meetings as well as raising funds for his nominated charities.

Councillor John Ward has lived in Farnham for 26 years and has been an elected member of Waverley Borough Council since 2007. He was Leader of the Council from 2019 -2021, was previously the Mayor of Waverley in 2022/23 and has twice been the Mayor of Farnham Town Council.

The newly elected Mayor said:

"It is a fantastic privilege to be elected as the Mayor of Waverley for a second time.

"We live in a wonderful borough with a vibrant and thriving local community. I'm looking forward to meeting some of the many voluntary organisations that do so much good work for local people.

"During my time as Mayor, I have chosen to support two charities that are close to my heart. Farnham Assist, a Christian organisation that does great work supporting older people who have become isolated, and Post-19, a life skills programme that helps young people to reach their full potential

"I am grateful to be entrusted with this responsibility and, with Gillian my Mayoress beside me, I will do my best to represent you all."

Councillor Penny Rivers was Mayor from May 2023 and supported The Meath Epilepsy Charity and Skillway, a charity that benefits disadvantaged young people. During her time as Mayor, she successfully raised £4,600, which will be split equally between the two charities.
