OVER 8 MILLION FOR NEW LAYOU BRIDGE

Over eight million dollars have been allocated for the reconstruction of the Hillsborough Bridge.

A contract signing ceremony was held on Tuesday, with work to begin soon after. The construction of this bridge is expected to be completed within 8 months of its commencement.

The Hillsborough Bridge is one of the main bridges connecting the northern and southern communities. The eastern bridge was damaged during Hurricane Maria which left commuters using the western bridge for travelling in both directions.

'This has not only created a level of inconvenience for those of us who use this route several times a day but it has also led to chaotic activities at times. This project is therefore welcomed wholehearted since it will impact quite a huge section of our people. It is also worthy to mention the fact that this is happening at a time when most economies of the world are collapsing as a result of the covid-19 pandemic,' stated Parliamentary Representative for the St. Joseph Constituency, Hon. Dr. Adis King.

Construction works will include the demolition of the damaged pair and abutments. The demolition and site clearance works are expected to start almost immediately, while the geo-technical investigations and designs are ongoing. This will be followed by driving of steel piles for the bridge foundation, construction of reinforced concrete pile caps, construction of the bridge pair, construction of bridge abutments, installation of bridge decks, construction of retaining walls, asphalt concrete surfacing to the bridge and installation of bridge safety railings.

Minister for Public Works, Hon. Cassanni Laville noted that this project has been a priority for the Government.

'We have made this project a priority. It has certainly been a priority of this Government for some time. Resilient infrastructure is policy for this administration as part of our thrust to build back our Dynamic Dominica. We are serious about resilience and building this Dynamic Dominica and we are committed to allocating the necessary resources to have our infrastructure maintained,' Cassani Laville

Prime Minister, Hon Roosevelt Skerrit says he is confident that the contractors will deliver the project on time.

'We have had a very good working relation with the contractors, Offshore Marine, and we have no doubt that they will demonstrate their usual level of professionalism and efficiency on the construction of this bridge,' PM Skerrit added.
