Barclays Glasgow Campus crowned ‘Best of the Best 2023’ at the national BCO Awards ceremony

Beating off tough competition from an impressive range of workplaces throughout the UK, the Barclays Glasgow Campus scooped the 'Corporate Workplace' and 'Best of the Best 2023' awards at the national BCO Awards 2023. The British Council for Offices outlines its awards as providing 'public recognition for top quality design and functionality and a benchmark for excellence in workplaces.'

The Campus had already been recognised earlier this year, winning a trio of awards at the regional BCO Scotland Awards 2023. Accolades were secured in the 'Corporate Workplace', 'Innovation' and 'ESG' categories.

The Buchanan Wharf development has transformed a brownfield site, comprising redundant buildings and a derelict car park, into a new vibrant city centre district, including indoor and outdoor spaces for staff and community events. In addition to the office space for Barclays, amenities on campus include wellbeing facilities, community exhibition spaces, and a street food market offering fresh and healthy food options.

Not only does the development bring significant high-quality employment to the city, but it also offers a blueprint for commercial sustainability and employee wellbeing, and provides exceptional public realm including recreational space and an amphitheatre. The project included the creation of a Net Zero Carbon Energy Centre, showcasing a genuine commitment to reducing the impact of the campus on the planet.

The careful refurbishment of Kingston House - a historic listed building on the site - has created a new destination for markets, concerts, record fairs and the like, and acts as an occasional venue for Barclays events and their "town hall" gatherings. It has now been positioned as a space which will promote a broad programme of activity linked to the new Kingston public square that we also delivered. Together they form a unique contribution to the Tradeston regeneration initiative.

One of the major successes of the development has been the high-quality public realm which has woven all of the buildings in the development together into a new community. With extensive public squares, pocket parks, soft landscaping and the amphitheatre there are lots of beautiful spaces where people can stop, relax, contemplate or have a sandwich.

Despina Katsikakis, President of the British Council for Offices, recently commented to The Herald:

"…if you look at what Barclays have done in Glasgow, they have really created a hub for their technology innovation teams, a world-class building and destination for their people."

The BCO is a UK-wide organisation with more than 4,200 members, spanning the wide range of companies and disciplines in the commercial real estate sector.
