Recovery to Resilience Workshops Empower Golden Plains Shire Communities

Council is hosting 'Recovery to Resilience' Community Emergency Management workshops in the coming months to empower local communities with the skills and knowledge to prepare for future emergency events and establish Community Recovery Hubs in the townships of Teesdale, Inverleigh and Shelford.

Community Recovery Hubs are community-led locations for localised information sharing and support during an emergency management situation. The workshops will empower communities to implement their own learnings during future emergency events.

Topics covered in the workshops will include reflecting on recent flood events and identifying risks to individuals and communities. Participants will also learn about developing personal emergency management plans and communities will have opportunities to engage with essential services and organisations including the SES, Country Fire Authority (CFA) and Red Cross.

Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Brett Cunningham said empowering residents with emergency management knowledge and skills was critical to immediate disaster responses.

"In a disaster situation, official services and emergency response agencies will often be stretched with urgent priorities taking precedence. Establishing Community Recovery Hubs in local Golden Plains Shire towns will give residents a focal point where they can ask for help, share resources and find the latest information," Cr Cunningham said.

"These workshops will provide an understanding of the impact relating to recent flooding events, develop community-led recovery initiatives and offer training and planning to assist in the preparation for future emergency events."

Council has engaged Resilient Co. to facilitate the workshops at the following locations:

  • Shelford Recreation Reserve Club Rooms, Monday 20 May from 6 to 8pm.
  • Inverleigh Public Hall, Monday 3 June from 6 to 8pm.
  • Teesdale Community Hall, Thursday 20 June from 6 to 8pm.

These workshops have been made possible thanks to joint funding from the Victorian Government and Commonwealth Government under the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
