New Australian engine emissions rules published

Published on: 07 March 2018

Representatives in Australia, as well as the Department of the Environment and Energy, have been working with ICOMIA's* Marine Engine Committee (IMEC) to develop a new emissions standard for outdoor petrol powered equipment and marine engines (alternatively known as NRSIEE - non-road spark ignition engines and equipment).

The full emission rule is available at

Please note the following key dates:

  • 11 Jan 2018 Applications for Australian certification or exemptions open
  • 1 Jul 2018 Import prohibition commences
  • 1 Jul 2019 Supply probation commences

Marine engines that are certified as meeting emissions standards from the United States Environment Protection Agency, California Air Resources Board, Canada and the European Union automatically meet the new Australian standard.

If a product is not already certified then importers and manufacturers can apply for Australian certification.
