Congressman Cohen Announces New Funding to Address Stability of MLGW Transmission Towers Along the Wolf River

MEMPHIS - Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), a senior member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, today announced that the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) will provide funding to determine how to stabilize MLGW electricity transmission line towers threatened by erosion of the Wolf River banks between North Highland and Jackson Avenue north of Interstate 40. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will devote $50,000 to determining whether the project has a federal purpose. If it does, another $50,000 would be spent on a feasibility study for the bank stabilization work.

Congressman Cohen made the following statement:

"The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which in Tennessee only Congressman Cooper and I voted for, will make significant improvements to our roads, bridges, pipelines and transit systems. The funding I am announcing today addresses Memphis' critical infrastructure needs to keep our local electric grid safe and operational. It is a smart and timely use of this new funding."

In December, Congressman Cohen announcedthat Tennessee will be receiving $1.1 billion for improvements to roads and bridges in the first year of the IIJA. Last week, Congressman Cohen announcedthe IIJA will provide Tennessee with $60.4 million in the current fiscal year and $302.1 million over the next five years to address 881 bridges identified as in poor condition. Congressman Cohen noted that only Congressman Jim Cooper (TN-05) and he voted for the legislation from the entire Tennessee Congressional delegation.
