Oncologist Passos Coelho elected president of SPO

The director of the Oncology Center at Hospital da Luz Lisboa will be president of the Portuguese Society until 2025.

José Luis Passos Coelho, oncologist, and coordinator of the Oncology Center at Hospital da Luz Lisboa is the new president of the Portuguese Society of Oncology (SPO).

Elected last February, José Luis Passos Coelho succeeds Miguel Abreu as president of the SPO for the 2024-2025 term, with fellow directors Nuno Bonito (IPO Coimbra), Claudia Caeiro (ULS Braga), Joana Rodrigues (ULS Coimbra), Margarida Brito (IPO Lisbon), Marta Pinto (ULS Viseu) and Sara Alves (IPO Porto).

The Hospital da Luz oncologist graduated in Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon in 1982, having obtained his specialist degree in 1994, after a period of training at the John Hopkins Oncology Center (Baltimore, Maryland, USA).

He received his doctorate in Medicine in 1998 and has been a doctor at Hospital da Luz Lisboa since 2006, where he has been coordinator of the hospital's Oncology Center for several years. Before that, he worked at the IPO in Lisbon and was also director of oncology at Hospital Beatriz Ângelo.

He is a professor of Oncology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences of Universidade Nova de Lisboa and author or co-author of dozens of publications in national and international journals and is also responsible and coordinator of several multicenter and international clinical trials in oncology.
