The Bahamas receives the first Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX Facility

Nassau, Bahamas, (PAHO/WHO) - The Bahamas received 24,000 doses of Pediatric COVID-19 vaccines through the COVAX Facility, a global effort between the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance Gavi, UNICEF, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The arrival marks a historic step toward ensuring the equitable distribution of pediatric COVID-19 vaccines worldwide.

On hand to receive the vaccines were the Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas Hon. Phillip Davis; Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr. Michael Darville; Pan American Health Organization-World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Country Representative for The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands, Dr. Eldonna Boisson; and other officials from PAHO/WHO and the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

PAHO's Revolving Fund, which is responsible for the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines for the countries of the Americas under the COVAX Mechanism, sent 24,000 doses of Pfizer vaccine. The vaccines arrived at the Lynden Pindling International Airport.

Dr Eldonna Boisson, PAHO/WHO Country Representative for The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands stated, "In The Bahamas, where children will receive the COVID-19 vaccine, we encourage parents and guardians to follow the national vaccination recommendations of the Ministry of Health and Wellness. Vaccines help to minimize disruption to children's education, routines and other things that are important to their wellbeing''.

"As our children prepare to return to their classrooms, it is vital to protect our children and loved ones from the virus. Students, parents, and educators can all have greater confidence as they participate in school initiatives and extracurricular activities once vaccinated." Dr. Boisson encouraged the public to continue adhering to the COVID-19 public safety protocols including wearing masks which properly cover one's nose and mouth; proper cough and sneeze etiquette; remaining 3-6 feet apart; and frequently washing or sanitizing one's hands.

COVID-19 remains a global health emergency and PAHO/WHO continues to support the Ministry of Health and Wellness in monitoring the vaccination coverage, implementation of the electronic immunization information systems, and communication campaigns to address vaccination hesitancy. PAHO/WHO pledges to continue its support the Bahamian governments work regarding other public health issues leaving no one's health behind.
