City Selects Construction Manager for Wastewater Improvement

At the April 16 commission meeting, Pierre's elected leaders selected a construction manager at risk (CMaR) to lead a major update at the city's wastewater treatment plant.

The commission awarded the $25,000 CMaR contract to PKG Contracting from Fargo, N.D. As the CMaR, PKG will work closely with the previously selected engineering firm, Burns and McDonnell, on design and material selection to replace the final clarifier at the city's wastewater treatment plant.

"We used the CMaR process when we built the water treatment plant, and we were very pleased with it," said Kristi Honeywell, City Administrator. "PKG actually held that contract as well; we look forward to working with them again."

PKG was the only company to submit a proposal for the clarifier project.

A final clarifier is large piece of equipment used during the last stage in the wastewater treatment process. The plant's current final clarifier is 25 years old and reaching the end of its useful life.

PKG and Burns and McDonnell are expected to begin preconstruction services for design by the end of April. Once design is mostly complete, the City will consider extending the CMaR contract to include construction management, establish a construction timeline, and negotiate a guaranteed maximum price.
