MSUM holds sash ceremony for graduating international and multicultural students May 9

Thursday, May 9 | 6 p.m. | Comstock Memorial Union Ballroom

MSUM will host a sash ceremony for our diverse graduating students on Thursday, May 9, at 6 p.m. in the Comstock Memorial Union Ballroom.

President Tim Downs and Provost & Senior Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs Arrick Jackson will recognize graduating international and domestic students who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, LGBTQIA2S+, or intersectional. Students will receive a sash representing their country of citizenship or affinity.

"We know the hard work and dedication our international and multicultural students devote to graduate," said Fumi Cheever, MSUM's Global Engagement Director. "Students wear their graduation sashes during commencement to showcase their pride for their country of citizenship and their culture."

May's ceremony includes four multicultural graduate students, 13 multicultural undergraduate students, 11 international students receiving bachelor's degrees, and five international students earning master's degrees.

The student speakers are Hannah Andrusko-Starks from Coon Rapids, Minn., who is graduating with her Master of Science in educational leadership, and Arina Bratamidjaja, a psychology graduate from Bogor, Indonesia.

The program will also recognize five international exchange students studying at MSUM who will depart in May. The students represent the University of Lincoln in the United Kingdom, Agder University in Norway, Tsuda University and Kanto Gakuin University, both in Japan.

This special ceremony is sponsored by MSUM's Office of Diversity & Inclusion and the Center for Global Engagement.

MSUM is committed to creating an inclusive and accessible event. If you need a reasonable accommodation to attend, please contact Chuck Eade at [email protected]. You will be contacted individually to discuss your request.
