WASHINGTON - Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09), released the following statement after Dr. Janet L. Kavandi, Director of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's John H. Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, announced her retirement from NASA effective September 30:
'Director Kavandi is an exceptional leader. It is with absolute admiration and gratitude that I thank her for her service and tenure as Director at NASA Glenn and also as a decorated astronaut. Our Northern Ohio region is better for Dr. Kavandi's remarkable service at NASA and to the nation. Her leadership has helped to ensure that NASA Glenn and Plum Brook Station build on their excellent legacy and continue to be critical components of NASA's mission in human space flight, aeronautics and propulsion. Director Kavandi is an inspiration and I congratulate her on her retirement and extraordinary career.'
'It is important that Director Kavandi's successor be well suited to build upon her legacy and lead more than 3000 employees and contractors at the facility. NASA Glenn and Plum Brook Station are vital to the success of the NASA mission. Our economic success and Ohio's continued contribution to the space program demand an extraordinary steward to lead NASA Glenn forward. I look forward to working with the Ohio Congressional Delegation and the NASA Administrator to ensure that the new center director has the experience necessary to embark on a new era of exploration, discovery, and job-creating innovation at NASA Glenn.'
