Media Alert: Getting in the Dirt for Earth Day

WHAT: Sacramento County is promoting Earth Day by inviting the media to the International Rescue Committee's (IRC) New Roots Garden at Howe Park.

VISUALS: Via an environmentally-friendly County Department of Transportation CNG-fueled dump truck, Sacramento County will deliver 10 cubic yards of residentially collected food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard trimmings that have been processed into beneficial, nutrient-rich compost to the recently constructed New Roots Garden. A display table showing the progression from kitchen scraps, to compost, to healthy plants will be available. Staff and volunteers will be on-site to demonstrate the incorporation of compost into the soil and the planting of flowers and vegetables.

WHEN: April 20, 2023, 11 a.m.

WHERE: 2201 Cottage Way, Sacramento, CA 95825 (Bell Street entrance)

WHO:

  • John Lundgren, Sustainability Manager, Sacramento County
  • Emily Ballus, General Manager, Fulton-El Camino Recreation and Park District
  • Javid Qaum, Site Director, IRC; Tristan Hudak, Senior Manager, Direct Services, IRC; and Amy Kalmbach, Senior Manager, Protection and Wellness, IRC

John Lundgren, Sacramento County Sustainability Manager, said, "Our residents have been separating food scraps, food-soiled paper and yard trimmings to be turned into compost and kept out of the landfill. The delivery of this compost to the New Roots Garden closes the loop and builds healthy soil and plants, leading to increased community resiliency while also supporting the International Rescue Committee's food, social and environmental justice work with our refugee communities."
