Hatch and URPS embark on South Australia's Climate Ready Coasts Program

Adelaide, Australia October 22, 2023 - Hatch is thrilled to have been selected as a project partner with URPS for the Climate Ready Coasts Foundation Project. The Foundation Project forms a key part of the broader Climate Ready Coasts program.

The South Australian Local Government Association(LGA) recently announced the commencement of the South Australia Climate Ready Coasts program. This $3.7 million federally funded initiative led by the LGA in partnership with the State Government's Department for Environment and Water and the Coast Protection Board, marks a significant milestone in coastal management and adaptation planning for the state.

As the effects of climate change continue to escalate, it is imperative that proactive measures are taken to safeguard our communities, infrastructure, and natural resources. Coastal management is a formidable challenge for local and state governments due to limited resources, expertise, and comprehensive data on coastal risks.

The Climate Ready Coasts program sets out to address these challenges by:

  1. Developing coordinated and consistent approaches to coastal adaptation.
  2. Enhancing the understanding of coastal risk.
  3. Strengthening the capacity and confidence in coastal adaptation planning.
  4. Promoting evidence-based decision-making and investment along the coastline.

A central component of this initiative is the Foundations Project, which will culminate in the creation of the Coastal Adaptation Standards for South Australia.

"Along with our partner URPS, we are honored to spearhead this initiative, with a commitment to establishing a pioneering standard for adaptation planning in South Australia," shares Annabel Sandery, coastal lead for Hatch. "The Climate Ready Coasts program presents an unparalleled opportunity to advocate for enduring, strategic, and fact-driven decision-making in our coastal areas."

Hatch and URPS are committed to collaborating closely with stakeholders to address the challenges posed by climate change, fortify our coastlines, and ensure a resilient future for South Australia.
