Dozens of families from across Tarrant County will party the night away at the second annual sensory-friendly Unified Dance.

About the event: Fort Worth's Park & Recreation Department and the Fort Worth ISD are joining to create a magical night for both general education and special education students. The youth - and their parents - can take part in dancing, arts and crafts, face painting, karaoke, yard games, basketball, food and lots more. The highlight of the night will be the coronation of the Dance King and Queen and door prizes to lucky winners.

Event details: Put on your dancin' shoes and join the fun from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, at Diamond Hill Community Center, 1700 N.E. 37th St.

The goal: To make Fort Worth's recreation opportunities more inclusive and to meet the needs of all residents.

What they're saying: "The Park & Recreation department has been working on being more inclusive to individuals with special needs and has been working with staff at FWISD who work directly with these students," said Victoria Leach, supervisor at Thomas Place Community Center, one of the dance organizers. "We started an adaptive recreation program at one of our centers, and it brought to light the need for recreational opportunities for older students and individuals who have aged out of many programs.

"We strive to make Fort Worth a place that is inclusive for all, and we're excited to create additional programming and events that embrace all audiences," Leach said.
