City awards $1.1 million to support North Sacramento organizations

The City of Sacramento's District 2 Council Office is awarding $1.1 million in grant funding to seven North Sacramento nonprofit organizations.

Open to nonprofits and small businesses located within District 2 boundaries, the North Sacramento Transformative Reinvestment grant program funds an array of activities with the goal of creating and retaining jobs as well as expanding existing businesses, programs, and services.

Applicants applied for the grant this past winter. They were scored through a review panel process with the seven highest scoring applicants being recommended for funding.

Awardees include arts nonprofit, Studio T Arts & Entertainment, which will use the funds to buildout youth instruction space on Del Paso Boulevard.

The Greater Sacramento Urban League was also awarded funding to transform the vacant parcel on the corner of Grand Avenue and Marysville Boulevard into a community gathering space featuring an outdoor plaza, maker spaces, retail spaces, and a commercial kitchen.

With the current funding, $1.7 million remains out of the initial $2.8 million allocated to this program. The District 2 Council Office plans to dedicate a portion of the remaining funding for small business support.

"Congratulations to the organizations selected for this important funding," said District 2 Councilmember Shoun Thao. "I'm confident that these projects will significantly benefit North Sacramento. However, I'm also mindful of our district's small businesses' needs. That's why I intend to reallocate part of the remaining funds to aid them."

Thao said his office will collaborate with the community in the upcoming weeks to determine the optimal structure and execution of a small business support initiative.

The funds are part of a $5 million federal American Rescue Plan (ARP) allocation set aside for North Sacramento.

Investments in North Sacramento

This latest investment builds upon two rounds of a façade improvement grant program. Under Councilmember Thao's direction, the City will open a third round of façade grants next month eligible to District 2 properties located along commercial corridors.

The third round of façade grants will also coincide with the City Council's April 30 consideration of the Neighborhood Development Action Team's Forward Together Action Plan. A community-driven plan, Forward Together identifies priorities to increase the quality of life and economic growth for people and businesses along the Marysville-Del Paso Boulevard corridor.

Should Council approve Forward Together, the City will launch a $500,000 grant program to fund the identified priorities. To ensure alignment with Forward Together, staff will use the identified priorities to inform all future North Sacramento ARP programming.
