STATEMENT: Wilmer-Hutchins High School safety update

DALLAS - Everyone at Dallas ISD wants the Wilmer-Hutchins High School community to know that our hearts are with them and grateful that our student is on the path to full recovery.

This incident has shown us areas where we must improve to keep our schools safe. Our investigation revealed the handgun was brought into the school during the late entry process during which several safety protocols were not strictly followed.

As a result, we have implemented immediate changes districtwide including increasing personnel for arrival and dismissal, comprehensively retraining all staff on backpack searches, wands, and metal detectors, and revamping schedules so more staff is available to monitor students on the campus.
Schools should always be safe havens, and we are proud of our students and team members who have stepped up to be part of the solution. It takes all of us working together to eliminate what has become all too common.

COMUNICADO: Actualización sobre la seguridad en Wilmer-Hutchins High School

DALLAS - Todos en Dallas ISD seguimos teniendo a la comunidad de Wilmer-Hutchins High School en nuestros pensamientos y corazones, y es un alivio saber que nuestro estudiante se está recuperando.

Este incidente nos ha mostrado áreas en las que debemos mejorar para mantener las escuelas seguras. Nuestra investigación reveló que el arma fue ingresada en la escuela durante el proceso de entrada tarde en que varios protocolos de seguridad no fueron estrictamente acatados.

Como resultado, hemos implementado algunos cambios inmediatos a nivel del distrito que incluyen un aumento de personal a la hora de la entrada y la salida, una capacitación integral para todo el personal sobre revisiones de mochilas y detectores de metal y modificaciones al horario para que más personal esté disponible para supervisar a los estudiantes en el plantel.
Las escuelas deben ser lugares seguros y estamos orgullosos de los estudiantes que quieren formar parte de la solución. Juntos podremos eliminar esto que se ha vuelto demasiado común.
