Out with the Old…
Although not always visible to the traveling public from the roadway, the 16@95 Improvement Projects team has been busy demolishing the old Interstate 16 (I-16) westbound bridges over Bunger Pit Road, Tremont Road, and the CSX railroad to make way for the new bridges. Check out the visual step by step of demolishing these bridges.
1. The bridge deck of the old bridge is scored into sections.
2. A hydraulic hammer breaks up the old concrete deck for removal.
3. Each section of concrete deck is hoisted by a crane to the work area down below.
4. After the concrete deck is removed, the old steel girders are removed.
5.With the bridge deck and girders removed, only the substructure remains of the old bridge. The substructure is then cut into sections and removed one column at a time. Once the substructure is removed, construction of the new bridge can begin.
