Out with the Old…
Although not always visible to the traveling public from the roadway, the 16@95 Improvement Projects team has been busy demolishing the old Interstate 16 (I-16) westbound bridges over Bunger Pit Road, Tremont Road, and the CSX railroad to make way for the new bridges. Check out the visual step by step of demolishing these bridges.
1. The bridge deck of the old bridge is scored into sections.
2. A hydraulic hammer breaks up the old concrete deck for removal.
3. Each section of concrete deck is hoisted by a crane to the work area down below.
4. After the concrete deck is removed, the old steel girders are removed.
5.With the bridge deck and girders removed, only the substructure remains of the old bridge. The substructure is then cut into sections and removed one column at a time. Once the substructure is removed, construction of the new bridge can begin.
Overhead Signs - ITS
New signage is going up throughout the project area, along with the new intelligent transportation system (ITS) camera poles.
1. Crews are preparing the foundation for the installation of a new interstate sign on I-16 eastbound.
2. The new overhead signs are installed at night to minimize disruptions to the traveling public.
3. One of the new overhead signs on I-16 westbound.
4. Cameras* will be installed throughout the 16@95 Improvement Projects as part of the ITS. This new system includes:
  • 56 Video Detection System cameras*
  • 25 Closed-Circuit Television cameras*
  • 5 Dynamic Message Signs
*Please note: Georgia DOT cameras are not recording. Camera data is not stored or saved.
I-16 Widening
The widening of I-16 is well underway between I-95 and I-516.
1. In preparation for the I-16 roadway widening, crews removed unsuitable soils from the project area.
2. Progress continues with the placement of the graded aggregate base course for the I-16 roadway widening between I-95 and I-516.
