Football superstar and Class of 1978 Georgia Sports Hall of Famer Jimmy Orr passed away on Tuesday at his home in Brunswick, Ga. He was 85 years old.
Jimmy played wide receiver at the University of Georgia from 1955-1957, leading the SEC twice in receiving, catching 24 passes for 443 yards in 1955 and 16 passes for 237 yards in 1957.
In his 13 years with the NFL, Jimmy played first for the Pittsburgh Steelers (1958-1960) and then went on to ten years with the Baltimore Colts (1961-1970). He was selected to the Pro Bowl with both teams and was the 1958 NFL Rookie of the Year. In his 13 years with the NFL, Jimmy averaged 19.8 yards per catch, leading the league three times. He caught 400 passes for 7,914 yards over his career with 66 touchdowns in 149 games and led the Colts to the Super Bowl in both the 1968 and 1971 seasons.
A familiar face to those of us at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame, Jimmy will be greatly missed. Our sincere condolences go out his family, friends and loved ones.
