Mayor Jones Prepares to Deliver Inaugural State of the City Address

Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones is preparing to deliver his inaugural State of the City address on Tuesday, March 5 at the Freeman Center Field House on the campus of Christopher Newport University. Registration and a reception begin at 5:30 p.m.; the Mayor's address starts at 6:40 p.m.

The theme of this year's event is "Building Forward." During his remarks, Mayor Jones will celebrate recent city accomplishments while detailing plans and projects to guide the city over the next several years.

"When I ran for mayor, I asked the citizens of Newport News to 'Build with Me,' and they gave me the incredible responsibility and privilege to serve our city," said Mayor Phillip Jones. "I am proud of the projects and strategies we have implemented this year. From dynamic youth programs that are the first in our state to a vibrant arts initiative celebrating our heritage and elevating local artists, Newport News is taking a strategic and focused approach to holistic community development."

The Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is coordinating the event and Old Point National Bank is serving as the Presenting Sponsor.

"As the voice of the Peninsula business community and a strong advocate for the region's economic growth, the Virginia Peninsula Chamber looks forward to hosting the Newport News State of the City each year as a forum for the Mayor to share the city's good news and plans," said Bob McKenna, President/CEO of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber.

During the event, Mayor Jones will announce a new safety initiative. Over the next year, Newport News will implement several key programs to enhance community safety and promote youth engagement.

"Gun violence is a national issue that Newport News is addressing through civic engagement, collaboration, inclusiveness, and innovation," said Mayor Jones. "I am committed to working with my colleagues on City Council, the City Manager, leadership, and private and public partners to immediately launch programs that will deliver transformational change to impact today and generations to come."

Tickets for the Newport News State of the City are $45 per person and sponsorships are available at a variety of levels. To register or become a sponsor, visit the Chamber of Commerce website.
