Long Beach, CA - The City of Long Beach Development Services Department is recognizing National Community Planning Month throughout the month of October and the community is invited to participate in two events to learn about and get involved in the City's planning process. Observed annually in October, National Community Planning Month recognizes urban planners' role in creating thriving, inclusive communities.

"Our City planners work diligently every day to make Long Beach a beautiful, safe place to live, work and visit," said Mayor Robert Garcia. "We hope the community can join in the upcoming events to learn more about what Planning staff and other departments do to support the growth and development of the city."

The City's theme for this year's Planning Month commemoration, "Collaborating to Enhance the Places and Spaces You Love," aims to showcase interdepartmental collaboration in the City's planning efforts and the importance of coming together to promote more equitable and sustainable development. In honor of Planning Month, the community is invited to participate in two events hosted by the Development Services Department:

Planning Commission on the Road
Thursday, Oct. 20, 2022, 5 p.m.
Martin Luther King Jr. Park Social Hall
1950 Lemon Ave.

Community Programs and Services Fair
Saturday, Oct. 29, 2022, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Long Beach Civic Center Plaza
411 W. Ocean Blvd.

Planning Commission on the Road will provide opportunities for residents to experience the Planning Commission process and engage with the Commissioners. Appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council, the seven-member Commission plays a vital role in shaping the future development of the city. The family-friendly Community Programs and Services Fair will feature information booths hosted by several City Departments. The free event will also offer children's activities, food, music and giveaways.

Beyond the City's dedicated Planning Bureau, planners also work in other City Departments to develop innovative and accessible parks, ensure the Long Beach Airport and Port of Long Beach run safely and efficiently, create mobility infrastructure for many modes of transportation and produce new housing and jobs for all residents.

"Planning is an incredibly powerful and important part of the human experience, it is about envisioning a better future, examining today and charting a path between those two points," said Acting Director of Development Services Christopher Koontz. "Through the work of Planning across the city, planners are involved in delivering crucial services and infrastructure that residents will be able to enjoy for years to come."

Each year, the American Planning Association celebrates National Community Planning Month to recognize the work of planners to improve the built community and the well-being of individuals.
