Backgrounder: The Government of Canada makes historic contribution to support Indigenous languages in the North

Today, the Government of Canada announced an investment of $39.4 million for Indigenous languages in the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon. With today's announcement, and investments made in Budget 2019, the government has invested $77.2 million to support Indigenous languages in the North.

Funds committed to date will increase the number of Indigenous-led, community-driven activities dedicated to revitalizing Indigenous languages, as well as the number of resources available to strengthen them.

Note: Some recipients are not listed below as their funding agreements are not yet finalized but are included in the total funding amounts.
