Community Relations Monthly E-Tip: Safe Winter Driving

December E-Tip

Cold weather is upon us, and with winter right around the corner, it is important to be extra careful while on the road. Follow the tips below to ensure that you, as well as other drivers and pedestrians, are safe this holiday season:

Winter Driving Tips

  • Avoid driving while you're fatigued.
  • Never warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage.
  • Do not leave your vehicle unattended while it is warming up.
  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated.
  • If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold, rainy and snowy weather.
  • Do not use cruise control when driving on wet or slippery surfaces.
  • Use your seat belt every time you get into your vehicle.
  • Whenever windshield wipers are needed, remember to turn on your headlights for added visibility.

Tips for Long-Distance Winter Trips

  • Check weather reports prior to a long-distance drive and before driving in isolated areas. Delay trips when especially bad weather is expected. If you must leave, let others know your route, destination, and estimated time of arrival.
  • Always make sure your vehicle is in peak operating condition prior to any out-of-town trips, especially if you are driving to a location where there is ice/snow on the road.
  • If you become snow-bound, stay with your vehicle. It provides temporary shelter and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you. Do not over exert yourself if you try to push or dig your vehicle out of the snow.
  • Make sure your vehicle's exhaust pipe is not clogged with snow, ice, or mud. A blocked exhaust pipe can cause deadly carbon monoxide gas to leak into the passenger compartment while the engine is running.
