America’s Essential Hospitals Fills Top Policy Position with Washington Veteran

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WASHINGTON - Robert Nelb, MPH, a health policy expert with more than 15 years of experience working on safety net issues for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Congress, begins his new role today as policy director for America's Essential Hospitals.

Nelb joins the association after 10 years as a principal analyst for the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission, where he led the commission's work advising Congress on hospital payment, managed care directed payments, financing, delivery system reform, long-term care payment, physician payment, and eligibility policies.

"Rob could not be a better fit for the policy work we do on behalf of essential hospitals, which rely on Medicaid and other federal support to meet their safety net mission," said Beth Feldpush, DrPH, senior vice president of policy and advocacy. "We're excited to have him on our team."

Nelb will lead policy analysis and development work for America's Essential Hospitals, which represents more than 300 hospitals and health systems that care for low-income and marginalized people. In earlier roles, Nelb served as a health insurance specialist in the CMS Division of State Demonstrations and Waivers; a Presidential Management Fellow in the office of the Health and Human Services secretary; and a National Academy for Social Insurance Fellow with the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging.

"After more than a decade studying the vital role of hospitals at the center of our health care safety net, I'm excited to help advance policies that support essential health systems and the people they serve," Nelb said.

During his career, Nelb has served in various related volunteer positions, including as chair of the State Health Research and Policy Interest Group, at AcademyHealth; and professional development chair for the Society of Health Policy Young Professionals, in Washington, D.C.
