George Skeek Found Guilty of Felony Sexual Abuse of a Minor

(Juneau, AK) - On June 10, 2021, a Juneau jury found 47-year-old George Skeek guilty of sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree and sexual assault in the third degree after a weeklong trial. This was the first felony trial in Juneau post the lifting of the court's COVID restrictions.

This case was prosecuted by Bailey Woolfstead from the Office of Special Prosecution's Rural Prosecution Unit with assistance from Kaci Schroeder. The convictions against Mr. Skeek were related to an event that occurred in 2017 where Mr. Skeek engaged in sexual contact with a 12-year-old while the victim was sleeping on the couch of their family's apartment. This was a retrial from 2019, where it ended with a hung jury.

Mr. Skeek was remanded to the Department of Corrections pending sentencing. As a repeat felony offender, he is facing a presumptive sentencing range of 10-25 years with a maximum of 99 years. Sentencing is currently scheduled for October 29. 2021.

'Too often, victims of sexual assault and sexual abuse do not come forward and report their traumas because they are afraid they won't be taken seriously or that no one will believe them,' said Assistant Attorney General Bailey Woolfstead. 'This child and their family displayed courage to come forward. This child was believed - that is what the unanimous verdict of the 12 members of the jury declares: you are believed.'
