Fontana City Sees Positive Results in Street Vendor Compliance Efforts

The City of Fontana is pleased to announce significant progress in its ongoing efforts to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations among street vendors. Through proactive measures, Fontana has seen a notable improvement in vendor compliance since the implementation of updated ordinances aimed at safeguarding public health and safety.

"Our ongoing endeavors reflect our unwavering commitment to ensuring the well-being of our residents," said Mayor Acquanetta Warren.

In response to persistent challenges posed by unlicensed and unsafe street vending practices, the Fontana City Council took decisive action to strengthen enforcement capabilities and uphold state and local health codes. Since the effective date of the revised ordinance on November 23, 2023, the city's code compliance division has been actively engaged in educating vendors about compliance requirements and enforcing regulations.

Key initiatives undertaken by the city include an extensive educational campaign conducted by the code compliance team, which involved multiple interactions with vendors to provide information on permitting opportunities and health regulations. Additionally, an educational workshop hosted in partnership with San Bernardino County Health on January 24, 2024, provided valuable insights into the permitting process and addressed questions from vendors and community members.

As a result of these efforts, Fontana has observed a significant increase in vendor compliance. Since December 2023, the city has reported:

  • 0 vendors arrested
  • 10 licensed vendors
  • 10 applications pending
  • 266 education/warnings issue
  • 29 perishable confiscations
  • 29 impoundments
  • 5 Impoundment recoveries

These achievements underscore the city's commitment to ensuring the health and safety of its residents while supporting the local vendor community.

The success of Fontana's efforts has garnered attention from neighboring agencies, with more cities considering the adoption of similar ordinances to address street vending challenges. The cities of San Diego, Anaheim, Santa Barbara, and Riverside County, for example, all recently adopted ordinances allowing for the impoundment of vending equipment as a measure to promote compliance.

Fontana continues to build on its achievements and looks forward to furthering its collaboration with community stakeholders to achieve widespread adherence to regulations among street vendors.
