NYK Welcomes Australian University Student Interns to Japan under the New Colombo Plan, the Australian Federal Government's Educational Assistance Program

Mar. 21, 2024

Promoting a stronger partnership between Australia and Japan through the development of the next generation of human resources

On March 6, NYK participated for the first time in the New Colombo Plan Mitsubishi Group Internship Program for Australian university students. The New Colombo Plan (NCP)* is a next-generation development assistance program sponsored by the Australian federal government (Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade). Fourteen students participated in the internship.

The NCP is a signature initiative of the Australian Government which aims to lift knowledge of the Indo-Pacific in Australia by supporting Australian undergraduates to undertake study, language training and internships in the region. Mitsubishi Group companies operating in Australia have jointly implemented the New Colombo Plan Mitsubishi Group Internship Program since 2017 to support international students from the country. This year, eight Mitsubishi Group companies** conducted the internship program from February 26 to March 8, each company in turn.

The interns were given a tour of the port of Yokohama (Daikoku) Car Terminal and a ship-handling simulator experience at Japan Marine Science Inc. (JMS). They also learned about the business activities of the NYK Group through an introduction to our ESG management and a game in which they had to create a voyage schedule as a ship operator. In addition, young employees of NYK supported the interns during their internship, making it a meaningful opportunity for both sides to engage in international exchange.

*New Colombo Project (NPC)
The NPC supports study abroad, language training, and internships for Australian students in the Indo-Pacific region through two study abroad programs: the NCP Scholarship, which supports long-term study abroad programs of up to 19 months, and the NCP Mobility Program, which supports short-term study abroad programs. Since 2014, 169 NCP Scholars and 5506 NCP Mobility Program grants have been awarded to New Colombo Program participants in Japan (2024) (including 20 NCP Scholars and 481 NCP Mobility Program recipients in FY2024).
