Washington state takes progressive action on safety camera enforcement

Washington Governor Jay Inslee signed progressive legislation that allows safety camera enforcement beyond previous locations. This is first-of-its-kind legislation in the U.S. that goes beyond the normal red-light, speed, and school enforcement programs and expands to locations determined as necessary by local jurisdictions.

"It's a remarkable achievement for the state of Washington to be at the forefront of expanding safety camera enforcement programs," expressed Eugene Kwak, senior vice president of product. "At Verra Mobility, we are committed to tirelessly adapting our products to meet the evolving needs of our customers. As Washington expands their programs and reaps the benefits of safety camera programs, we eagerly anticipate expanding and enhancing our product capabilities in collaboration with them."

Washington has already established itself as one of the most proactive states in the U.S. for camera enforcement. In 2022, the state passed legislation that empowered cities to extend camera programs to hospitals, parks, and along routes to/from school, a testament to the effectiveness of these initiatives. Now House Bill 2384 will go even further.

The Washington Traffic Safety Commission cites speeding as one of the "fatal four" behaviors most seen in traffic crashes. With an evidence-based approach, allowing for more cameras in more locations will help to slow drivers around critical locations.
