Diaz-Balart: I Commend the Trump Administration for Bringing Criminal Charges Against the Maduro Regime and the FARC

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Congressman Mario Diaz-Balart issued the following statement after the Department of Justice (DOJ) announced charges against Nicolas Maduro, members of the Maduro regime, and high-level operatives of the FARC.

Today's announcement revealed charges brought in district courts in Florida, New York, and Washington D.C. against Maduro and 14 current or former members of his regime, including the current Minister of Defense, the head of Venezuela's sham National Constituent Assembly, the Chief Justice of Venezuela's Supreme Court, and the former vice president of Venezuela. Charges were also revealed against top operatives in the FARC.

Before today, the U.S. Treasury Department had imposed sanctions on at least 22 individuals with connections to Venezuela, and 27 companies, by designating them as 'Specially Designated Narcotics Traffickers' under the Foreign Narcotics Kingpin Designation Act, including then-Vice President Tareck el Aissami in 2017 and former intelligence operative Pedro Luis Martin in 2018. Nearly 100 other Venezuelans have been sanctioned for corruption or human rights abuses, including high-level operatives, Maduro himself and members of his immediate family.

'I commend the Trump Administration for announcing new charges against Maduro and his cronies for crimes related to drug trafficking and money laundering, as well as members of the FARC, a U.S.-designated foreign terrorist organization. The charges announced by the U.S. Department of Justice today reveal wide-ranging corruption and criminality throughout the highest levels of the Maduro regime, and these criminals who have plundered Venezuela's resources and engaged in drug trafficking must be brought to justice.'

'President Trump and his administration have continued to impose tough sanctions on the Maduro regime while maintaining strong support for the democratically elected Guaido administration and solidarity with the longsuffering Venezuelan people. I look forward to continuing to work with the administration and my colleagues in continuing to hold the Maduro regime accountable for its crimes, corruption, and violent oppression.'
