Higgins, Garbarino Lead Efforts to Extend the National Flood Insurance Program

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Clay Higgins (R-LA) and Congressman Andrew Garbarino (R-NY) have introduced legislation to extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) through March 31, 2024.

This extension would ensure continued coverage for NFIP policyholders and allow new policies to be written while the government works through appropriations bills and toward a long-term reauthorization and reform of the NFIP.

Earlier this week, Congressman Higgins also introduced standalone legislation to extend the program through January 15, 2024.

Since being elected to Congress, Congressman Higgins has supported the long-term reauthorization of NFIP, including reforms to improve the program. Over the summer, he helped introduce the bipartisan and bicameral National Flood Insurance Program Reauthorization (NFIP-RE) Act of 2023, which would reauthorize the program for five years and provide greater stability for homeowners and small business owners.

"Flood insurance for Louisiana home and business owners is an unfortunate necessity. Many rely heavily on the NFIP to protect their livelihoods,"said Congressman Higgins. "Since coming to Congress, I have worked with bipartisan and bicameral colleagues to advance a reauthorization bill that ensures Louisiana residents are well protected from flooding. Congress should not allow this important program to lapse. My office remains deeply committed to prioritizing reforms that lower premiums, provide more accurate flood plain mapping, and focus on pre-disaster mitigation."
