Press Release

Des Moines, Iowa- Friday, April 19, 2024 - The City of Des Moines' 77-year-old Ewing Park Lilac Arboretum is poised to burst into a flood of brilliant color next week. Central Iowans are invited to see and smell the fragrance of this beautiful 35-acre display featuring 1,000 lilac bushes showcasing over 300 varieties of a favorite spring flower.

The lilac display will peak over the next week. Ewing Park is located at Indianola Road and Easter Lake Drive. The lilac overlook parking area will be open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The Harry Piper Parkway will not be open due to construction, so residents should plan their route accordingly.

In 1937, the former 357-acre Ewing Farm became the City's largest public park. The City of Des Moines dedicated and began developing 35 acres of the park to a future lilac garden in 1939 and the arboretum first opened for public enjoyment in 1947.
