APCO Seeks Working Group Members for the Revision of an Operational Standard for the Use of TTY/TDD

Alexandria, VA - The Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International has filed a Project Initiation with the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to revise APCO American National Standard (ANS) Minimum Operational Standards for the use of TTY/TDD or Similar Device in the Emergency Communications Center. This revision seeks to specify minimum operational guidelines for emergency communications centers (ECCs) when providing emergency service access to the deaf, deaf-blind, and hard-of-hearing communities using TTY/TDD or similar devices. APCO is soliciting individuals with ECC training, and technical and operational knowledge to establish a working group and participate in the revision of this standard.

"As we strive to enhance the standards that shape the future of public safety, we call upon the expertise and dedication of the public safety community," said Becky Neugent, President of APCO International. "Participating in the standards development process is invaluable, reflecting our collective commitment to excellence. Together, we lead the way in setting standards that truly make a difference in emergency communications."

Once established, this working group will meet twice monthly on the second and fourth Monday at 1 p.m. ET. All interested persons, including users, producers and those with general interest should complete the online application to join this working group at Join a Working Group. Participants in an APCO standards working group will acquire points toward their Registered Public-Safety Leader (RPL) recertification.

The deadline to sign up is May 19, 2024. Selections will be made within two weeks of the closing date, and all will be notified of their status via email. Additional information can be obtained by contacting the Standards Program Manager at [email protected] or by calling (386) 681-8719.
