PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR THE NATIONAL HERITAGE, THE ARTS AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT Restoration efforts underway for the historic Old Church of Our Saviour

A restoration project is underway as part of the Local Councils Scheme Call of 2022, focusing on the restoration of the Old Church of Our Saviour. Led by the Restoration and Preservation Department, this project should be concluded by the end of next year.

During an onsite visit, Minister for the National Heritage, the Arts and Local Government Owen Bonnici commended the commitment shown by the Lija Local Council and the Restoration and Preservation Department, highlighting the value of preserving our cultural heritage.

"This church, with its rich history and architectural significance, deserves the meticulous attention it's receiving. Thanks to all those dedicated to this project; your work ensures that this piece of history remains alive and appreciated for years to come," Minister Bonnici concluded.

Architect Jean Frendo explained the work being carried out on this project, including the cleaning of the church's surfaces; restoration of the original appearance by removing cement layers; repairing exposed joints using a special mortar; replacing of worn stones; and sculpting new decorations to replace damaged ones. Additionally, cracks are being sealed to prevent water from entering, and the apertures will be restored.

This Church was Lija's Parish Church for almost a century in the late 16th to 17th century. The church's original design, a rectangular nave, was enhanced in the late 16th century with the addition of a transept.

The Lija Local Council was also present for this visit.
