The Water Technology Unit (WTU) at the Center for Advanced Materials (CAM) at Qatar University (QU), in partnership with the Korea Water Cluster (KWC), hosted a Symposium on Sustainable Water Environment and Energy Technology (SWEET). This event was held on 22 April 2024, at QU in collaboration with the Republic Korean Embassy in Qatar.

This symposium marks a significant milestone in the dynamic partnership between QU and KWC, a relationship formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in December 2023. The MoU underscores a shared commitment to fostering long-term cooperation within the water industry, emphasizing mutual benefits and interests. This collaboration aims to catalyze new advancements in water management technology, bolster international and local research and development efforts in Qatar, and pave the way for groundbreaking international joint research initiatives.

The SWEET symposium is designed as a premier platform for dialogue and exchange, featuring distinguished speakers from leading industry giants, including ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Qatar Shell Research & Technology Center (QSRTC), Doosan Enerbility, Acciona, and Bintech-Korea. These organizations represent the vanguard of technological innovation in water and energy management. The event will offer insights into current technological trends, tackle the challenges facing the water-energy nexus, and highlight potential groundbreaking advancements that could redefine the industry's future. This initiative is a significant stride towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) and SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), highlighting the critical intersection of water and energy in pursuing a sustainable future.

Moreover, the Korean Embassy in Qatar has expressed strong support for this event, recognizing it as a vital opportunity to advance water technology development between the two nations. This symposium is especially significant as it aligns with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Qatar and Korea, underscoring a deepening bilateral relationship and a shared commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Through this symposium, QU and KWC not only reaffirm their commitment to advancing water technology but also to fostering international cooperation that contributes significantly to global water and energy security. This event marks a momentous step forward in collaborative efforts to meet the SDGs and ensure a sustainable future for all.
Prof. Mariam Al-Maadeed, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at QU, stated, "The convening of this scientific seminar on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the State of Qatar and the Republic of Korea, reflects the mutual commitment towards sustainability and innovation in the energy and water sectors, which enhances the depth of bilateral relations between the two countries."
