How to keep hearts healthy

February 01, 2023

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the country. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that nearly half of adults in the United States have high blood pressure, which can lead to heart disease. February is American Heart Month, which reminds us to make sure our hearts are beating strong.

Your HealthSelectSM medical plan benefits can help you learn about your risk factors so you can prevent and manage potential heart health issues before they get serious.

Scheduling an annual preventive checkup with your primary care provider (PCP) will keep you informed about your overall health and is a great place to start taking care of your heart.

If your PCP recommends additional screenings following your checkup, the HealthSelectShoppERSSM incentive program may help lessen some of the financial stress. When eligible HealthSelect medical plan participants and their eligible dependents shop and choose high-quality, lower-cost options for certain medical services or procedures, like MRIs and CT scans, they can earn up to $500 in TexFlexSM flexible spending account (FSA) rewards each plan year. Earned incentives will be deposited into the member's TexFlex FSA. If you don't have a TexFlex FSA, the Employees Retirement System of Texas will open one for you after you earn a reward.

Participate in American Heart Month by taking care of your heart and scheduling your preventive checkup with your PCP today. To find a PCP for your preventive checkup or shop for care with HealthSelectShoppERS, visit the HealthSelect website.
