Travelers Aid at TPA names Volunteer of the Year

After retiring from a 40-year career with Tampa Electric, Chrys Remmers decided she needed "something" to keep herself busy.

She had previously volunteered with the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay and was familiar with the organization's Travelers Aid program at Tampa International Airport. The all-volunteer group assists passengers with everything from simple directions to more challenging cases like helping stranded passengers without money or those in crisis trying to escape domestic violence.

So in 2020, Remmers decided to begin volunteering. She spent time each week at the Airport and continued getting more and more involved.

"I met a young lady at the Airport who was under 18. She was trying to escape from her boyfriend and get back to New York," recalls Remmers. "I was able to get the police involved and make sure she safely made it home."

For the past three years, Remmers has racked up more than 400 hours volunteering at TPA. She not only goes above and beyond to assist passengers in need, she is also in charge of training new volunteers so they are familiar with the Airport before they begin working shifts on their own.

"She's amazing," said Travelers Aid Coordinator Beverly Thompson. "She even helps put out our monthly newsletter. She does so much to help our organization and the passengers here at TPA."

Now, Remmers is being honored for her hard work and dedication. The Crisis Center of Tampa Bay presented her with this year's 2024 Marie Lou Corristan Volunteer of the Year Award. Marie Lou Corristan was a legend within Travelers Aid after spending 35 years volunteering at TPA.

The Travelers Aid program is made possible by the more than 50 volunteers who cover shifts 7 days a week at the Travelers Aid desk on Level 2 of the Main Terminal, and through the generous financial support from sponsor Signature Aviation.

"We want to congratulate Chrys on her extraordinary accomplishment. She and all the volunteers at the Travelers Aid desk at the Tampa International Airport do amazing work," said Bill Sneesby, General Manager for Signature Aviation at TPA. "For some passengers, this might be one of the first interactions they have with someone in Tampa. It's important for Airport visitors to see the caring of all the great volunteers at the Travelers Aid desk who are right there to assist each day."

"Sometimes it's just holding somebody's hand," said Remmers of her love of helping people at the Airport. "I really do enjoy it."

When she's not volunteering, Remmers says she loves spending time with her three grandchildren and going out to lunch with her fellow volunteers from Travelers Aid.
