Homes benefiting this winter from energy efficiency measures

As part of Green Homes Grant in Hertsmere, 48 households have had energy-efficiency measures installed in their homes - making them warmer, greener and cheaper to run.

A total of 78 households on low incomes and living in poorly insulated homes have benefited from the first phase of the Green Homes Grant scheme that was implemented in Hertsmere and Three Rivers. The scheme, which entitled them to free energy-efficiency and renewable energy improvements, helped in relieving fuel poverty, cost of living pressures as well as improve living conditions.

The scheme offered a wide range of insulation measures and renewable heating technologies including insulation of external walls, cavity walls, loft and under floor, installation of heating controls and where appropriate solar PV. These measures support homes in reducing dependence on fossil fuel-based energy and their carbon footprint.

Through the free upgrades households can expect to reduce their energy consumption resulting in a potential reduction of over £1,500 on their energy bills and result in an average carbon saving of 1.26 tonnes per year.

Councillor Seamus Quilty, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: "The Green Home Grant scheme offered vital improvements to our residents living on a low income and finding it hard to heat their homes. The measures offered through the scheme has helped many to enjoy warmer homes, reduced energy bills whilst at the same time decrease their home's impact on the environment.

"I am delighted we have been able to help so many households, which is especially important with the financial hardships many families on low incomes are facing. As well as saving on their energy bills, residents are able to reduce their carbon emissions and support the transition to Net Zero, whilst feeling warmer, healthier and happier in their homes during these winter months.

"I would encourage households on a low income and living in poorly insulated homes in Hertsmere to sign up to the next phase of the scheme - Sustainable Warmth - to receive free household improvements for their home. It's not too late; the free home improvement measures can make a significant impact on your energy bills and help you live more comfortably during the colder months."

Eligible residents who sign up to the scheme will receive a visit from Warm Works, who will carry out a survey to agree the work that will be carried out. An accredited and registered sub-contractor team then completes the installation of the agreed heating and energy-efficiency measures, before an independent inspection assesses the completed work against rigorous quality standards.

"A few minutes to complete our short application could help your home stay warmer and save money for years ahead," adds Cllr Quilty.
