Following Weirton Visit, Manchin Calls on International Trade Commission to Reverse Its Tin Mill Imports Determination

Charleston, WV - Today, U.S. Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) called on the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) to reverse its determination from this past February that imports of tin mill products from China, Canada and Germany do not sufficiently harm the domestic steel industry. The decision directly caused the Cleveland-Cliffs tin mill steel facility in Weirton to announce its closure the following week, resulting in nearly 1,000 employee layoffs, and poses serious risks to domestic manufacturers nationwide.

"My conversations in Weirton yesterday with local officials, Union members, and concerned citizens further proved what we already knew to be true - the ITC must reverse its catastrophic decision to favor illegally dumped and subsidized imports over the livelihoods of hardworking Americans," said Senator Manchin. "Cleveland-Cliffs' closure is an absolute injustice to West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio workers, the entire domestic steel industry, and the very principle of fair competition. It will undoubtedly weaken our economic and national security. But this fight is not over - President Biden and his Administration must get directly involved to reverse the ITC's decision and I will continue doing everything I can to see that through."

Yesterday, Senator Manchin spoke with Weirton officials and local Union leadership on the importance of reversing the decision.
