WASHINGTON - A physician who spearheaded affordable health care initiatives and drove clinical excellence efforts during her 25-year career with health insurance providers will lead clinical affairs at the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). Dr. Razia Hashmi, M.D., MPH, FAAFP, began as vice president of clinical affairs on Monday.
Hashmi brings a unique combination of clinical and operational experience that sets her up for success as she leads BCBSA's Office of Clinical Affairs and advances BCBSA's mission of shaping the health care landscape in America so that Blue Cross and Blue Shield (BCBS) Plans can deliver the quality, equitable and affordable care that their members and communities deserve.

As the vice president of Clinical Affairs, Hashmi will lead clinical support, medical policy solutions, pharmacy solutions and clinical solutions.
Before joining BCBSA, Hashmi spent almost 18 years at Elevance Health/Anthem BCBS where she held numerous leadership positions. Most recently, she served as Elevance's vice president and chief medical officer where in addition to spearheading affordable health care initiatives across 14 commercial and exchange markets, she successfully drove quality and population health initiatives.
Hashmi is board-certified in Family Medicine and Geriatrics. She received her medical education at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry, India and completed her Master of Public Health from Columbia University.
She is based in BCBSA's Washington, D.C. office.
